BB & Poppy

Hi Gail,
It seems like a long time since Sarah or myself contacted
you. We have been keeping an eye on the website and are
pleased to see that many more dogs are being homed by Noah's
Arc than ever before. Keep up the good work! Surprised that
BB & Poppy aren't in the 'Homed' dogs section of the website
though.
Well, it has now been 7 and half months since the arrival of
BB & Poppy and we thought you might like to know how they
are getting on as they approach their first Xmas in England.
The last time we contacted you, they had only been here 5 weeks and
had succeeded in passing their Bronze kennel club awards and
were settling in just fine.
Well time has
flown, but their progress just seems to amaze us all. They
have been with us to country shows, markets, fetes, parties
etc and of course the pub!!! Both are responding so well to
training and their surroundings and are both doing more
advanced obedience work at our local dog clubs. BB is really
just a 35kg lapdog who loves playing fetch!!! Poppy however
is the thinker of the two and really enjoys doing agility.
Since we last emailed you, we sadly lost our 14 year old
belgian shepherd/collie rescue Bella, and the effect on both
BB, Poppy and our GSD Sasha was quite visible. The day it
happened, Poppy stuck to me like glue all day; it was almost
as if she could feel my pain and wanted to help and be there
for me. The following week, we took them to a crossbreed
show called Canine Capers 2009 near Bedford. Sarah persuaded
me to enter Poppy in the prettiest bitch group and to our
astonishment she won! If that wasn't enough, at the end when
all the group winners went into the ring, she got Reserve
Best in Show! BB even pitched in with a rosette in the Best
Coat section and both dogs received a special announcement
when the organisers found out about their background.
A week later,
and in less than 6 months since their arrival, both
dogs passed their Silver Kennel Club Awards. To say we were
proud of them would be an understatement, and I never
hesitate to use them to demonstrate when I am teaching my
training classes. Rehabilitating rescue dogs is hard work at
the best of times, but when they are strays used to doing
things for themselves then the process is much harder. The
key to beginning this process is the treatment they receive
when they are first rescued. We can't praise highly
enough Lorraine & Peter at Allymo kennels, the successful
rehoming and rehabilitation of BB & Poppy (and many other
dogs!) begins with the excellent work they do; and is a
reflection of the work done by all at Noah's Arc.
By way of a thank you from them,
we have in their name been appealing for Toys, Treats,
Collars, Leads etc that we can send to the kennels for Xmas,
as presents for the dogs that are patiently waiting their
turn for rehoming. Pet-Couriers, the courier who delivered
BB & Poppy to us here has kindly agreed to deliver the
collection and will be dropping the donations to Allymo
Kennels before Xmas. People here who know BB & Poppy's story
and have heard of Noah's Arc through us are being very
generous.
The attached pictures show BB &
Poppy at the Canine Capers Show: Poppy & Martin with her
Prettiest Bitch Award, then winning Reserve Best in Show, BB
& Poppy together and finally BB with Sarah. We are now
preparing and looking forward to our first Xmas of hopefully
many with these 2 lovable Spanish rogues, who have
become such an important part of our lives.
Best Wishes to all at Noah's Arc
from Martin & Sarah
Pedro

Hello Wonderful Staff of Noah's
Arc,
We are Brian and Vivienne
Edwards who fostered Tilly and Rafael from December to
March, 2004, fell in love with Teddy the Alsatian who
had been in a car accident, wanted to adopt him, but
were too late, and finally adopted Pedro, the
Husky-cross puppy and we sincerely hope Solo, his
brother found a home shortly thereafter.
We left Gran Alacant in June 2007 with Pedro who is now 5,
flourishing, has traveled through Europe, stopping in
the UK for almost 4 months, flown on to Canada where he
has lived for the last 2 years and absolutely loves the
snow. In his 5 years he has been to 5 countries in
Europe, 5 provinces in Canada which are bigger than many
European countries, and is the reason we are living out
in the country where has plenty of room to run.
Last point and another
apology, we don't remember the names of everyone we met
5 years ago. Things moved so quickly with each exchange,
so please excuse the omission of names. We do however
remember how we felt and the kindness and hospitality
which were extended to us. Writing the last HubPage
about Rafael and Tilly, I came across your adopted
dogs progress page and only now did I realize we
could have e-mailed you an update on Pedro so please
feel free to include him in the page when and if you
have time using the attached photos. If you do, would
you let us know please?
Prosperous Blessings for
all you do,
Viv, Brian, Pedro and Scampy
Canela

I shall take this opportunity to fill you in on all the
delights, now that Canela looks like she might be going to
take a nap.
As I already said, Stefan and I were on tenterhooks until
around 3.00 am, when Mr Steiger phoned that he was nearly at
the door. The first thing Canela did when she saw Stefan was
give him some doggie kisses on the nose. She seemed not a
bit the worse for wear, quite the opposite, she was ready to
carry on travelling round the world, I bet.
Canela had a bite to eat, a sip of water, a quick squeak on
her toy and fell fast asleep until this morning (I enclose 2
pictures from St. Gallen). By the time I finally was able to
hold her in my arms it was close to 1.00 pm. Stefan took a
taxi from the station, and I was there in front of the house
with pounding heart. I have had dogs all my life, I have
known scores of other peoples' dogs, but
never have I ever clapped eyes on
such a heart-meltingly precious little dog! Her greeting to
me was one of her famous nose-kisses. I held her close in
her little coat while Stefan went into the house to get the
other three dogs (who were barking, knowing fully well
Something Was Up). We all took a short walk together.
Unfortunately, our three did not give her the silent,
dignified welcome of your two. She was, I think, a bit
flabbergasted at their rushing at her and barking. All six
of us toddled up the road and back. Once inside the house we
kept all the dogs on their leads. The cats showed up, got an
eyeful of her and left. Slowly, one by one, we let the other
dogs sniff her and vice versa. First Baxter - as expected -
would love nothing more than to have her all to himself. He
does not bark at her, but wags his tail furiously, stands
stiff and alert like a terrier should, dreaming of a
honeymoon. Dancer, I think, is a bit afraid of her, but once
he gets over that, he will find a grand playmate in her. He
actually hid between my legs for protection! Nonesuch, the
jealous and possessive one, will take time to accept her. It
took him 2 weeks to allow Baxter close, and 6 days to allow
Dancer close. In the meantime, we have to shower Nonesuch
with affection, to let him know that this newest addition
will not mean any difference in his ranking or in our
hearts. This type of behaviour is quite typical of Chinese
Crested Hairless dogs. What it means is that we shall have
to be vigilant for the time it takes him to accept her as a
new member of the household, this could mean days or weeks.
I am sure you are familiar with this kind of situation - it
is very tiring, but essential. Once the magic moment comes
when N. allows her to lie next to him, then we know we are
there (a bit like the Therapy Chair).
Right afterwards, they were all given their lunch - the boys
downstairs in the laundry as usual, and Canela in the
kitchen with me. She has a wonderful appetite! Once she got
something on her stomach it was playtime for the little
lady. She found her toys and played with them, she also
found my feet and wanted to play with them, too. But as Gail
said, one sharpish "no", and she stops immediately. She has
trotted up and down some of the stairs, and never lets us
out of her sight. Now, she is sleeping in a basket, half
wrapped up in a blanket, next to my desk. For the moment,
she is to be left in peace, so the boys are taking their
naps elsewhere.
There is a saying in Switzerland - and in Germany, too, I
think - that when angels travel, the sun comes out. Sure
enough, some warming rays peeked through the cloud cover
when she arrived. Proof positive, that what we have here, in
this very house is, a celestial being - one of a kind, and
dear beyond words. We love her to bits! She is so playful,
and her antics are a hoot! She listens to your every word
and interacts with you on an immediate level that is so
endearing. She wanted to climb all over Baxter when I let
the two of them get better acquainted. He let her do as she
pleased. When she tried to get Dancer to play, is when he
took refuge between my legs. A real nose-to-nose with
Nonesuch will need time. We shall just take it one day at a
time, be patient and loving to each of them and soon they
will all get along perfectly.
Stefan gave her a quarter tablet for the jouney home. She
was not sick at all, nor was she sick during the entire trip
to Switzerland. I am so glad for her!
Well, I desperately need to eat something, so will close
now. But, more later as things progress. Thank you both so
very much for fostering her, loving her, and making her
journey so pleasant. What a priceless life you have saved!
Take care, and big hugs all around
